The corner where the sample was cut for C-14 dating. The large cut out piece was removed in 1507 and given away as a royal gift. The smaller section was cut in 1973 for textile analysis. The area cut for dating is along the seam right in the middle of the darkened area that has now been determined to be a madder root dye used to blend in the color of new threads used to repair the Shroud in the middle ages. The presence of starch and cotton has also been found in this corner but nowhere else on the Shroud.
