Byzantine and Orthodox icons of Christ all derive their genesis from "The Image not Made by Hands" discovered in Edessa (Southern Turkey) in 544. Also known as the "Image of Edessa" or "The True Likeness". Once this mysterious cloth was discovered all the icon images of Christ change to show long hair, full beard, large eyes, flat nose and other similarities to the Shroud image. Many Shroud scholars believe the Shroud and the Edessa Image are one and the same.
